Delhi Court Drama: Retired Teacher Threatens to Kill Woman Judge After Cheque Bounce Conviction

In a shocking incident that unfolded inside a courtroom in Delhi, a 63-year-old retired government school teacher, furious over his conviction in a six-year-old cheque bounce case, threatened and abused Judicial Magistrate First Class Shivangi Mangla at the Dwarka Court. The incident occurred on April 2, shortly after she pronounced him guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

According to the court order, the convict erupted in rage, hurled verbal abuses, and even attempted to throw an object at the judge. As per Judge Mangla’s account, the accused shouted at her, saying, “Tu hai kya cheez… tu bahar mil, dekhte hai kaise zinda ghar jaati hai” (You are nothing… come outside, let’s see how you return home alive).

Judge Faced Death Threats, Harassment, and Physical Intimidation

Judge Mangla detailed in her order that the accused not only used derogatory language involving her mother but also tried to coerce her into resigning from her post. Moreover, his lawyer, Athul Kumar, allegedly joined in, threatening to file false complaints unless the judge agreed to acquit the accused.

The courtroom quickly descended into chaos, with the judge noting mental and physical harassment, an act she termed an attack on the dignity and independence of the judiciary.

On April 5, Judge Mangla sentenced the man to 22 months of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹6.65 lakh. His lawyer pleaded for a lighter sentence, citing his client’s age and financial hardships, including supporting three unemployed sons.

Contempt Proceedings Against the Lawyer Underway

Judge Mangla also issued a show cause notice to the convict’s counsel, Athul Kumar, asking for a written explanation for his conduct. The matter has been referred to the Principal District and Sessions Judge of South West Delhi for further referral to the Delhi High Court for possible criminal contempt proceedings.

Additionally, the judge called for the National Commission for Women to initiate appropriate action in light of the threats made.
