Zelenskiy of Ukraine travels to Saudi Arabia to seek Arab League backing for his people.

In an effort to rally support for his country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited the Arab League conference on Friday in Saudi Arabia, where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman declared his willingness to arbitrate the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.

At the Jeddah summit, Arab leaders also enthusiastically welcomed Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad back into their fold after a decade of exile. Assad has received significant assistance from Russia in his country’s civil war.

The Saudi Crown Prince added in his opening remarks, “We reaffirm the kingdom’s readiness to continue mediating efforts between Russia and Ukraine, and to support all international efforts aimed at resolving the crisis politically in a way that contributes to achieving security.”

Zelenskiy praised Saudi Arabia for its previous assistance and said that each participant will get the text of his 10-point peace proposal. Zelenskiy was also scheduled to attend a summit of the G7 leaders this weekend in the Japanese city of Hiroshima. He urged them to deal directly and without middlemen with Ukraine.

Despite Western pressure on Gulf oil producers to help isolate Russia, a fellow OPEC+ member, Gulf governments have attempted to maintain their neutrality in the Ukraine war.
