Election Commission reminds Political Parties, about the misuse of religious institutions for politics, this time it applies in J&K too
Election Commission of India, the national body which organises elections throughout India has reminded political parties about the misuse of religious institutions for politics.
Election Commission of India had directed all the Political Parties not to use religious institutions for politics in 2012. In its letter to the Chief Electoral Officers of all states and union territories except the then region of Jammu and Kashmir, the commission conveyed that if the above is not followed, it will welcome FIRs under various sections of Religious Institutions (Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1988. The commission also addressed it to the presidents and general secretaries of National and Regional political parties.
2023 Letter Addressed To Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh Area Too
In the commission’s 2012 letter, it mentioned that the direction issued is not applicable to Jammu and Kashmir region. But in the 2023 letter, the commission has not mentioned anywhere about the exception of the Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh region from following the directions.
