Delhi Reports Sharp Surge in Swine Flu Cases: 1,449 H1N1 Infections This Year.

Delhi has recorded a sharp rise in cases of influenza H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, this year with 1,449 cases reported till August 12, according to data from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). This marks a more than six-fold increase compared to the 229 infections recorded during the same period last year.

Govt Response: Special Wards Set Up

Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh told that the Delhi government hospitals are equipped to handle the rise.

“There are special and separate wards in various Delhi hospitals like RML and Safdarjung to deal with the rise in cases,” Singh said. Doctors at hospitals including Ganga Ram Hospital have also reported patients with severe symptoms, with some developing respiratory failure.

What is H1N1 Swine Flu?

The H1N1 virus is a type of influenza virus that causes viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs. Symptoms are similar to seasonal flu but can lead to complications in high-risk groups. Health officials have urged people to follow precautions including masking in crowded places, hand hygiene, and early medical consultation if symptoms persist.
