Anaesthetic Vials, Unanswered Questions: NRS Nurse Death Under Probe

The death of 30-year-old nurse Rupali Burman at Kolkata’s Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRS) has triggered a police investigation, with empty anaesthetic vials and a syringe recovered from the restroom where she was found unresponsive.

Burman, who was posted in the gynaecology department’s High Dependency Unit (HDU), was on night duty on Wednesday. Preliminary reports indicate that she entered the HDU restroom at around 10:20 pm after attending to a patient. When she did not return, colleagues called out to her around seven minutes later. After receiving no response, they forced open the door and found Burman lying unconscious inside the restroom.

She was rushed to NRS Hospital for medical attention, where doctors declared her dead. Police later recovered empty vials of an anaesthetic injection and a syringe from inside the toilet. Burman’s mobile phone has also been seized, while CCTV footage and other forensic evidence are being examined to piece together what happened.

ACP (Crime) Kunal Agarwal said police were alerted after the nurse was found motionless inside the restroom. He confirmed that Burman was posted in the gynaecology department and said a post-mortem examination would be conducted to determine the cause and circumstances of her death.

The Kolkata Police’s Detective Department Homicide Wing is now handling the case. A forensic team has examined the scene, while CCTV footage from outside the restroom is being reviewed as investigators try to piece together the events leading up to Burman’s death.

Police have not reached any conclusion of suicide at this stage. The recovery of anaesthetic vials and a syringe from the restroom has failed to explain how, or whether, they were linked to her death. The exact cause of death is expected to become clear after the post-mortem and forensic examinations.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Health Department has ordered a separate inquiry into the incident. An investigation committee has been assigned to examine the events that preceded the nurse’s death.

With CCTV footage, Burman’s mobile phone and other material retrieved from the crime scene at present, investigators are trying to establish what happened inside the hospital restroom. The probe is continuing.
