From Monks to Merit Lists: Ramakrishna Mission Steps Into Bengal’s Teacher Recruitment Arena

Kolkata, August 13: Three senior monks of The Ramakrishna Mission, Kolkata have joined the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC), marking an unusual new role for the organisation in a government recruitment body at a time when the commission is seeking to strengthen transparency and credibility in the teacher recruitment process. 

The West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC) has essentially appointed four new members, including The Ramakrishna Mission monks Swami Atmapriyananda, Swami Shastrajnanananda and Swami Tattwasarananda, along with Professor Ramya Tarakada Venkateswaran of IIM Calcutta. These appointments were discussed at length at a press conference on Tuesday alongside newly appointed WBSSC Chairman Dushyant Nariala. 

The three monks bring capacious experience in education and institutional administration to the commission.  While Swami Atmapriyananda is Pro-Chancellor and Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute,  Swami Shastrajnanananda heads the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, Narendrapur and Swami Tattwasarananda is a trustee of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, a member of the Ramakrishna Mission’s governing body and Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Golpark. Ramya Tarakada Venkateswaran, a professor in the Strategic Management Group at IIM Calcutta. 

The four appointments, effective immediately, come at a critical juncture for the WBSSC, which is tasked with completing multiple recruitment exercises following prolonged legal disputes over the state’s school recruitment process. 

The commission’s current leadership has said the fresh recruitment will be carried out strictly in accordance with its rules and directions issued by the courts.

 Dushyant Nariala, the newly appointed WBSSC Chairman said that the commission is aiming to complete the recruitment process at the earliest. “Teachers will be appointed strictly in accordance with the rules and orders prescribed by the School Service Commission,” he said, further.

The commission is currently overseeing a massive recruitment drive for around 39,000 vacancies.Nearly 15,000 candidates had completed verification under the 2025 recruitment process according to Nariala. The commission has also completed recruitment for 1,177 candidates from the pending 2016 Upper Primary exercise. Recommendation letters have been issued for 308 special education teacher posts.

The importance of transparency has been specifically highlighted by Swami Atmapriyananda, one of the newly appointed commission members.Our objective is to ensure transparency in recruitment,” Atmapriyananda said. He added that recruitment-related information would be published on the commission’s website so that candidates have access to accurate information.

According to him, making information available in the public domain would reduce the scope for questions over the recruitment process and help maintain transparency.

Presently,  several recruitment-related cases remain pending before the Supreme Court, making it difficult for the commission to proceed in certain matters without judicial directions, he stated further.

The push for greater transparency comes in the wake of the state’s long-running school recruitment controversy . The Supreme Court’s intervention led to the cancellation of a large number of appointments from the 2016 recruitment process, leaving the commission with the task of undertaking fresh recruitment while complying with judicial directions. The recruitment process has since remained under close scrutiny from candidates and stakeholders.

The latest appointments therefore signify the attempts made by the WBSSC to move forward with the recruitment process while addressing concerns over procedural transparency, credibility and accountability. 

The inclusion of Ramakrishna Mission’s representatives also brings the organisation into Bengal’s teacher recruitment framework for the very first time,extending its longstanding presence in education through its network of schools, colleges and educational institutions.

This development comes shortly after ISKCON entered Bengal’s government-school system through the PM POSHAN meal programme. While their roles are different, these developments mark the entry of two religious institutions into Bengal’s public education system. 

For the WBSSC, the immediate challenge is to balance the need for faster recruitment with procedural safeguards. Nariala said there was uncertainty over the scheduled distribution of recommendation letters for Higher Secondary teachers on August 14, even as the commission continued efforts to complete the process at the earliest. The commission is also preparing to publish the results of its Group C and Group D recruitment examinations after the Durga Puja festivities. 

On the other hand, the appointments bring together expansive experience from education, institutional administration and management. The Ramakrishna Mission representatives come from an institution with a long record in education, while Venkateswaran brings an academic and management perspective from IIM Calcutta. This combination could lend the commission broader institutional experience as it takes forward the recruitment process. 

Thousands of candidates are still awaiting the outcome of various recruitment exercises, but the reconstituted commission now has an opportunity to restore peoples’ faith in the process by ensuring timely appointments alongside greater transparency, accountability, procedural rigour and strict adherence to court directions.
