Iran: The Misunderstood Victim, power, oil, and the Politics
Iran stands at the centre of global geopolitics and is often seen as a destabilizing force. However, beneath this common view is a more complicated reality, one where Iran can also be seen as a misunderstood victim of history, geography, and power struggles. The idea that “whoever controls Iran controls the energy lifeline of the future” is not just talk; it reflects Iran’s strategic location and vast energy resources. These factors have put it in the spotlight of international interest for over a century.
Geographically, Iran sits at the junction of the Middle east, Central Asia, and close to Russia, which gives it great strategic importance. Its nearness to major energy markets and transport routes, especially the Strait of Hormuz, makes it a critical player in global oil supply.
The strained relationship between Iran and Global powers began with the D’Arcy concession when Mozzaffar Ad-Din Shah Qajar gave British control over Iranian oil fields. Later, during Mohammad Mossadegh’s time Iran tried to regain its sovereignty by nationalizing its oil industry in 1951. However a coup led by USA Central Intelligence Agency and British intelligence removed Mossadegh.
Then under the rule of Reza Shah Pahlavi, Iran saw modernisation but it hurts the core Islamic sentiments. This tension bought Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power and turned Iran into Islamic republic. That revolution demands for Iran’s supreme independence from foreign control. After Khomeini, Ali Khamenei took over the power.
Tensions with the United States remain due to Iran’s nuclear programme, that US fears could lead to nuclear weapons. Additionally, Iran’s ties to groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and Houthis have further complicated its global image, reinforcing views of Iran as a regional disruptor. Recent tensions between Iran and United States along with Israel is arising serious issues of nations like India. It its to fuel and energy crisis that is leading towards inflation, and threats to energy security.
It is thus better to say that Iran’s story is complex and cannot be simplified in narratives. But the ongoing situation is extreme and required serious attention. So, that peace could be established, because war only brings destruction of life, hope and happiness.
