The incident first drew attention when Russian photographer Julia Buruleva shared images of an elephant painted bright pink for a stylized shoot. The photos, taken in Jaipur, quickly went viral across social media, prompting widespread backlash from animal rights activists and the public.

According to reports the elephant identified was a 65-year-old named Chanchal, who was painted using what handlers described as “organic, non-toxic” colors typically associated with festive use. Organizers maintained that the paint was safely applied and washed off shortly after the shoot.

However, the situation escalated after it was reported that the elephant died roughly one month later. Authorities and experts have not established any direct link between the photoshoot and the animal’s death, and available reports indicate that the elephant had pre-existing age-related health conditions.
