Modi Sets $20 Billion Trade Milestone as India and Brazil Deepen Strategic Economic Partnership

Prime Minister says India and Brazil aim to boost bilateral trade beyond $20 billion, strengthening economic and strategic cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inรกcio Luca da Silva on Saturday reaffirmed the deepening strategic and economic partnership between India and Brazil, setting an ambitious goal of taking bilateral trade beyond USD 20 billion in the next five years. The announcement came after wide-ranging talks held at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, where the two leaders reviewed cooperation across multiple sectors – including critical minerals, technology, defence pharmaceuticals, agriculture and energy.

A “Win-Win Partnership”

Describing the relationship as a “win-win partnership,” PM Modi said that Brazil is India’s largest trading partner in Latin America and underscored the growing trust and confidence between the two nations. He stressed that the target isn’t just about numbers but reflects deeper mutual trust and a shared vision for cooperation.

“We are committed to taking our bilateral trade beyond USD 20 billion in the next five years. Our trade is not merely a number; it is a reflection of trust,” Modi said at the joint press conference alongside President Lula.

Strategic and Sectoral Cooperation

The discussions highlighted several areas where India and Brazil plan to intensify collaboration:

  • Critical minerals and rare earths: Memoranda of understanding were signed to enhance cooperation in mining and supply chains, important for technology and clean energy industries.
  • Technology and innovation: Both leaders agreed that cooperation in digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence and inclusive technology will benefit not just their economics but also contribute to Global South development.
  • Defence and pharmaceuticals: Agreements and dialogues on defence cooperation and expanding access to affordable medicines were also highlighted.
  • Agriculture and food security: Collaboration in precision farming, climate-resilient agriculture, biofertilisers and related areas was discussed to boost food security.

Broader Geopolitical Context

The renewed emphasis on trade and strategic ties comes at a time when both countries are looking to diversify global supply chains and strengthen South cooperation amid complex global trade dynamics. Brazilian President Lula highlighted the complementary strengths of the two economies, calling the partnership “a meeting of superlatives” and pointing to shrared democratic values and economic potential.

The trade push also coincides with Brazil’s broader efforts to deepen its commercial engagement with India – including participation by a large delegation of business leaders during the state visit and discussions on possibly expanding trade beyond the $20 billion target in the long term.

Current Trade Landscape

Bilateral trade between India and Brazil has been growing steadily, crossing about USD 15 billion in 2025. The new target of USD 20 billion reflects both countries’ ambitions to expand market access, diversify trade portfolios and strengthen economic ties beyond traditional commodities.
