India Opens Second Bailey Bridge in Sri Lanka, Strengthens Post-Cyclone Recovery

India has inaugurated a second Bailey Bridge in cyclone-affected areas of Sri Lanka, further strengthening its support for post-disaster reconstruction and recovery efforts in the island nation.

Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha said the inauguration also marks the formal launch of India’s USD 450 million assistance package for rebuilding infrastructure damaged by the cyclone. The support is being provided under Operation Sagar Bandhu, reflecting India’s commitment to assisting Sri Lanka during times of crisis.

As part of the initiative, India supplied 228 tonnes of Bailey bridge materials, enabling the rapid restoration of road connectivity in the affected up-country regions.

The newly opened bridge is expected to improve mobility, facilitate access to essential services and support economic activity in the region.

Officials said that the project shows the strong partnership between India and Sri Lanka highlighting India’s role in regional humanitarian and disaster relief efforts.
