BNP’s Zakaria Taher Emerges as Highest-Earning Candidate in Cumilla Ahead of 13th

Parliamentary Election: An analysis of election affidavits reveals that all ten nominated candidates of the
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are businesspersons by profession. Among them,
candidate Zakaria has declared the highest annual income, amounting to Tk 590 million,
placing him at the top of the list.
According to the financial disclosures submitted to the Election Commission, the primary
source of income for all ten candidates is business-related activities. These include
involvement in sectors such as industry, import–export, real estate, construction, and
commercial trading.
The affidavits indicate substantial holdings in bank deposits, shares, land, buildings, and
other immovable assets. Zakaria’s declared income significantly exceeds that of the other
candidates, drawing attention to the growing presence of high-net-worth individuals in
electoral politics.
Political and Social Context: Political analysts argue that the dominance of business elites among candidates reflects a broader trend in Bangladesh’s electoral landscape, where access to financial resources plays a decisive role in political competition. Critics contend that such a concentration
may marginalize middle- and lower-income representation, while supporters claim that
financially independent candidates are less vulnerable to corruption.
