Rupee Falls Against US Dollar in Forex Market Today

New Delhi, January 8, 2026: The Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar. The rupee is trading in the region of โ‚น89.90-โ‚น89.95 per dollar. The rupee was trading around โ‚น89.94 per dollar in intraday trade. The fall in the rupee came amid pressure from a strong US dollar and global market trends.

At the same time, the US dollar remains strong against all major currencies. A strong dollar index is continuously affecting all emerging currencies. Similarly, it is affecting the rupee. Market participants said that global caution and safe-haven demand supported the US dollar.

Continued FPI outflows further pressurized this. Importers increased demand for dollars, and elevated crude oil prices raised concerns over Indiaโ€™s import bill. India relies heavily on oil imports and thus is usually vulnerable to global crude movements.

The rupee, therefore, failed to show any recovery despite occasional support provided by the Reserve Bank of India. Participants continued to be wary and closely monitored the global interest rate signals along with geopolitical uncertainty.

Analysts note that strong dollar demand and global market caution continue to weigh on the rupee, limiting potential short-term gains from central bank interventions.

Falling Indian Rupees

What This Means for You

  • Everyday costs: A weaker rupee makes imports like oil, electronics, and machinery more expensive, which can push up prices for consumers.
  • Travel & study abroad: For Indians paying in dollars, expenses like tuition and travel are now costlier.
  • Business impact: Exporters can benefit in theory, but sustained weakness can raise input costs and inflationary pressures.

Market Outlook

A weaker rupee offers limited relief to exporters but raises concerns over higher import costs and inflation. Persistent pressure could restrict policy flexibility and keep markets cautious, with attention on global interest rates, capital flows, and geopolitical risks.
