Cool or Cringe? Why label it? Let people read what they love.

Youth’s Idea of a book, either “Cool” or “Cringe” and the judgements paired with approvals that come along with such
ideologies.
In this Article I want to put forward the hierarchies that today’s youth created amongst them regarding ” The number of books someone has read “, “Someone’s favourite author”, “Someone’s favourite genre”. Not only these above mentioned ones, today’s popular culture differentiates people based on various subjects, judging readers is one of the most “lame” trend that this generation is following .
I personally think judging someone based on the kind or the number of books they have read is one of the most prejudiced
ways of critiquing their choices. We are different individuals, we have our own likes and dislikes but such in vogue ways of
assessment now a days often make us insecure to engage with those tastes and distastes.
There might a friend who likes age old classics whereas there would be another such pal who likes to fall for romance fiction.
But that definitely doesn’t proclaim that the one reading intellectual classics is any way superior than the one who likes to
feel the emotions of love through books.
Reading is an age old habit that’s been granted a noble rank. This is the reason many of today’s digital age dreamers, voice out their
love for reading or books, just to be seen, to be noticed and to be respected. They love reading just because of “it’s aesthetics”
where in real life they struggle to finish a single page a month.
Today’s Generation has romanticized this idea of being a “Bookworm” that it lost its essence.
Literary elitism is one of the outmost kind of Criticisms to exist. People who actually like to read ,will read anything and will let others read anything without any judgement. Its always those “Pretentious readers” who’ll scrutinize you for picking up “a certain genre”, “a certain author”, “a certain binding”, “a certain volume”.

Reading is considered as a rewarding pursuit then why backlash for actually Reading what we love? Why nowadays we choose
books that doesnt really move us but just help us gain the society’s approval? Why do we need the society’s approval for doing something we love?
Some give backlash to authors, which is justified as a form of criticism but it starts gnawing once it begins to overstep limits.
Some might relate more with the intellectual discourse of Dostoevsky on the other hand Some might want to get swayed with a Ali Hazlewood romance. This totally and only depends on the individuals. If you like Kafka then you like him if someone likes Emily Henry then just let them.
You find solace in psychological turmoil let them find theirs in thefeeling of falling in love.
In today’s Generation the elitism of “Good taste in books” basically elevates the classics and the philosophical readers over people who read fiction or romance and that is utterly
objectionable.
And in the world of Globalisation and connectivity, Everyone keeps a track of their books “Online” simply for the sake of
bragging about their reading list. They barely care about what they are reading or whether it even interests them, instead they only care about the Validation they get online from fellow other such “Elite” Readers.
There’s another villain in this story that is the fear of being “Cringe” whereas most people who use the word “Cringe” to label literally anything, doubtfully have any deeper understanding of the psychological or cultural nuances of the word itself.
“You’re a fan of Dostoevsky?”
“Oh you’re so intellectual I respect you. You do read a lot then”
“Oh. so you read Colleen Hoover”
“I mean it’s alright pretty basic though, but do read ACTUAL books”

This comparison is outright arbitrary. Just because someone reads Dostoevsky that doesn’t mean he really has read alot of
books, that might be the first book he picked up and on the contrary Colleen hoover might be Someone’s 100th pick, then where does this arbitrary comparison start? Let alone putting an end to it.
Such unreasonable self made standards force Literary judgementalism evoked by Literary Elitism which is not needed.
Such ideologies discourage people to do what they love. Such criticism effects the reader’s will . Reading becomes a badge of prestige rather than the comfort zone o f pleasure.
You might have your self made categories in the realm of being a Bibliophile, I respect that. But why let it discourage others? Let them start with whatever they like who knows one day you might be the one trying to catch up?
