“Violence Engulfs Nepal Politics”
In recent years Nepal has been rocked by one of it’s deadliest waves of unrest as massive anti-corruption protest spiraled into violence, claiming the life of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal’s wife. Late Tuesday, according to local reports demonstators set Khanal’s residence ablaze late Tuesday evening amid escalating anger over corruption scandals and political instability. PM’s wife was caught inside the burning home and was killed in the fire. When the government banned 26 major social media platforms-such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and Youtube intended to curb misinformation it led to huge unrest. Tech-savy youths already frustra protestors widespread outrage. Alternate apps like Tik-tok, Viber were taken by protestors to mobilize nationwide demonstrations. At least 19 people were killed, dozens got injured and there was widespread damage of property. Clashes intensified over two days as demonstrators set government buildings ablaze, including Sigha Durbar, the Supreme Court, the parliament, the President’s residence and also the residences of top politicians.On Social media a video has been circulating purportedly showing locals carrying her body from the site sparking nationwide outrage and shock. Nepal’s leadership is uncertain as last Night Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced jis resignation and has reportedly fled the country. Initially protests being peaceful turned to a nationwide movement demanding sweeping reforms. Thousands of protestors have taken to the streets of Kathmandu and other major cities, chanting slogans against misrule and corruption. Situation remains tense despite deploying security forces. To restore order the Nepal Army was deplyed under an indefinite curfew to restore order.Soldies arrested agitators, cleared roads, evacuated ministers and patrolled key areas. The Incident marks a turning point in Nepal’s crisis as suggested by political analysts, deepning instability and potentially paving the way for fresh elections. The President of Nepal appealed for dialogue and calm urging all parties to resolve the crisis through peaceful means.
