Kavi Subhash Closure Sparks Urgent Metro Infrastructure Review.
Kolkata, West Bengal | July 30, 2025
On July 28, 2025, a major disruption unfolded in Kolkataโs metro network following the sudden Kavi Subhash closure. Cracks discovered on the pillars and roofing at the Kavi Subhash Metro station forced authorities to declare the structure unsafe. The decision came after a routine inspection raised serious concerns about the foundationโs stability.

Since the station serves as a crucial terminus for the Blue Line and links other important routes, its closure immediately impacted thousands of daily commuters. With safety taking priority, Metro Railway decided to suspend all public services at the station until reconstruction is complete. This incident now brings Kolkataโs urban planning and infrastructure decisions under intense scrutiny.
Safety Fears Trigger Sudden Kavi Subhash Closure
The Kavi Subhash closure was announced after engineers spotted cracks in multiple pillars supporting the New Garia metro platform. Located at the southern end of the North-South (Blue) Line, the station previously handled thousands of passengers each day. On Sunday evening, structural engineers carried out an emergency inspection following minor vibrations reported by staff. Upon finding horizontal cracks across several key points, officials took immediate action.
Metro Railway suspended operations for public safety and confirmed that the Down line would only remain open for empty rake movements to the depot. Public trains now terminate one stop earlier at Shahid Khudiram station. This has already created significant commuter bottlenecks in South Kolkata during peak hours.
Faulty Foundation Blamed for Kavi Subhash Closure
The structural failure leading to the Kavi Subhash closure points to foundational flaws dating back over a decade. Experts revealed that the station was built using a shallow raft foundation rather than deep-pile technology. This design choice proved risky, especially on soft, marshy terrain near New Garia. Monsoon water seepage worsened the problem over time, undermining the foundation and shifting the entire platform.
As cracks widened, engineers noticed visible tilting in the slabs and weakened concrete support. The affected platform will be demolished entirely. Metro Railway has issued tenders to rebuild the structure using new engineering standards. A target of nine months has been set for the full reconstruction.
City Commuters Grapple With Impact of Kavi Subhash Closure
The Kavi Subhash closure has placed heavy strain on commuters who rely on the station daily. On Monday morning, large crowds gathered at the locked gates, unaware of the overnight suspension. Many travelers had to scramble for alternate transport, with auto fares more than doubling. Routes from New Garia to Shahid Khudiram that usually cost โน20 now demand โน50 or more.
Due to the closure, the Orange Line that shares the terminal with Kavi Subhash also became partially disconnected. Without direct transfer access, commuters must exit and re-enter through crowded alternate stations. This breakdown in last-mile connectivity has exposed how dependent the southern corridor is on a single terminus.
Metro Engineers Begin Work on Urgent Rebuild Plan
After the Kavi Subhash closure, Metro officials initiated emergency steps to restore functionality as quickly as possible. Demolition work on the damaged platform, roofing, and columns will begin this week. A team of structural experts will supervise the rebuild using stronger materials and deeper foundation pillars. Metro Railway has already assigned an internal safety team to assess the integrity of neighboring stations.
During reconstruction, Metro will update passengers regularly and explore options to increase capacity at Shahid Khudiram. To ease congestion, additional buses have also been proposed between New Garia and adjacent metro points.
Kavi Subhash Closure Raises Red Flags in City Planning
The Kavi Subhash closure signals deeper issues with urban transport planning in Kolkata. Multiple engineers have criticized the original design choices made during the stationโs construction. They argue that cost-saving decisions often ignore long-term safety. The use of shallow foundations in waterlogged areas now appears short-sighted, especially when advanced technologies were available.
Urban planners and structural consultants are now calling for a citywide review of metro station designs. They emphasize that stations built using similar methods should undergo immediate inspection to prevent future emergencies. This incident, though contained, highlights the growing urgency for durable, climate-resilient public infrastructure in Kolkata.
