Kolkata Faces Severe Waterlogging & Vehicle Damage Amid Record Monsoon Rains

As torrential rains continue to batter Kolkata, large parts of the city are reeling under waterlogging, vehicle damage, and transport paralysis. Residents and commuters faced major disruptions across key localities, with many areas still submerged after consecutive days of intense rainfall.

VIP Road Submerged, Thousands Stranded

One of the worst-hit locations is VIP Road near the Haldiram crossing, where water levels reached knee-deep. Over 2,000 families in the Anupama housing complex have been impacted, with emergency services and food deliveries severely delayed. Commuters reported traffic gridlock lasting over three hours.

Vehicles Damaged, Mechanics Flooded with Work

Flooded roads and potholes have led to a surge in vehicle breakdowns across Kolkata. Two-wheeler riders in areas like MG Road, Gariahat, and Tollygunge complained of engine failures and wheel damage. Local garages are reporting a 3x rise in repair requests, turning roadside mechanics into overnight lifelines.

Rainfall Data: North and East Bear the Brunt

According to Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Tangra recorded 185 mm of rainfall, making it the most rain-hit area this week. Dum Dum and Maniktala saw over 150 mm, while Ballygunge and Jodhpur Park were less affected. Heavy tides from the Hooghly River further worsened flooding in low-lying zones.

KMC’s Emergency Measures

To tackle the situation, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has deployed jet-suction and portable pumps in critical areas like Amherst Street, BB Ganguly Street, and the Muktarambabu Belt. Officials assured that water levels would begin receding by August 1, barring further rain.

Warning for Residents

Weather forecasts predict continued high humidity and sporadic rain showers. Authorities advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel, wear protective gear, and stay alert in flood-prone areas.

With city life disrupted and infrastructure pushed to the limit, Kolkata’s latest monsoon surge is a reminder of the city’s urgent need for better drainage and disaster preparedness.
