Prolonged West Bengal Admissions Delay Creates Academic Chaos

The West Bengal admissions process has witnessed a severe setback this year. Legal uncertainties surrounding OBC reservations delayed the centralized admission timeline across state-run colleges. The delay, initially caused by a Calcutta High Court stay on the updated OBC list, eventually extended the application window until July 30.

This extension disrupted schedules in nearly 460 state-funded colleges. Meanwhile, private colleges completed their intake by early July. Students seeking clarity found themselves confused between the 2010 and 2025 OBC lists while applying.

Student Response Remains Strong Despite Challenges

Even with uncertainty, over 3.5 lakh students registered on the Centralized Admission Portal. Nearly 20.7 lakh applications were submitted before the final deadline. Notably, more than 4,000 students from outside Bengal applied.

Officials announced that the first merit list will release on August 7. However, there was a noticeable 30% drop in total applicants compared to last year. Experts believe many bright students chose colleges in other states due to these delays.

OBC Reservation Row Delays West Bengal Admissions

The main obstacle came from an interim stay by the High Court, which questioned the updated OBC list issued by the state. The Supreme Court later allowed students to select between the 2010 and 2025 versions of the list during registration.

The Education Department allowed candidates until July 31 to update their caste information accordingly. This provision, although helpful, contributed to further delays in publishing college merit lists.

State Colleges Prepare Catch-Up Plans for Admission Loss

Colleges across Bengal are now racing to release selection lists. Public universities, such as Calcutta University, plan to begin their classes by mid-August. However, they must first resolve caste category issues and publish clear merit lists.

In contrast, private colleges like St. Xavier’s and Scottish Church already began classes in July. As a result, government colleges fear losing top-ranking students to autonomous institutions or universities outside the state.

Government Seeks Fast Recovery from Admission Bottleneck

The Education Department instructed colleges to accelerate academic sessions once admissions conclude. Several institutions are preparing to start postgraduate admissions in early August to manage the lost time.

Additionally, state authorities promised that all pending applications would be processed fairly. Rapid counseling, immediate allotments, and orientation classes have been advised to minimize academic disruption.

Next Steps for Students Amid West Bengal Admissions Confusion

Students now wait for the release of final merit lists, scheduled for August 7. Many hope their chosen colleges will begin sessions quickly. Institutions, meanwhile, must ensure transparency and timely intake to prevent further loss of student interest.

Parents and educationists urged the government to reform its centralized system. They emphasized the need for early planning, coordination with the judiciary, and clear communication with applicants.
