Divya Deshmukh Becomes Youngest Indian to Win Women’s World Cup and Earn GM Title

Divya Deshmukh Grandmaster win at the FIDE Women’s World Cup 2025 marks a major milestone in Indian chess history. She defeated Koneru Humpy in the final to become the country’s 88th Grandmaster. She also became the first Indian woman to win the Women’s World Cup.

Both classical games in the final ended in draws. The match went into rapid tiebreaks. Divya held a draw with White in the first. She then won with Black in the second game. Her solid opening and quick play under time pressure gave her the edge. Humpy blundered in the final moments.

Title Without Norms or Rating Requirement

Divya entered the event without a single Grandmaster norm. She also did not have the 2500 rating required for the title. By winning the World Cup, she directly earned the GM title. FIDE regulations allow this rare exception for winners of major events.

Her World Cup win qualifies her for the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament. This event will decide the next challenger for the Women’s World Championship. Humpy also qualified by finishing as a finalist.

Youngest Indian Woman to Win the Title

Divya is now the youngest Indian to win the Women’s World Cup. She joins Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, and Vaishali Rameshbabu as the only Indian women Grandmasters. Globally, she is only the 44th woman to receive the GM title.

Divya returned to Nagpur after her win. Hundreds of fans, students, and officials welcomed her. Her family joined the celebrations. A formal felicitation event is scheduled for August 2. CM Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari are expected to attend.

Her Journey Started at Age Five

Divya began playing chess at the age of five. She trained under coach Rahul Joshi. She credits her first coach, who passed away in 2020, as her biggest influence.

Divya won the Asian Women’s Championship in 2023. She also won the Tata Steel Rapid event the same year. In 2024, she clinched the World U-20 Girls Championship. These events boosted her confidence before the World Cup.

Focus Now Shifts to the Candidates

Divya has a year to prepare for the Women’s Candidates. She plans to work on her openings and time management. She has stated that she will not take a break from training.
