India Dam Flushing Begins Monthly Under Strategic Water Policy Shift
India initiated monthly sediment flushing operations at key dams across Jammu and Kashmir. The decision follows the April suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Authorities say the plan improves hydroelectric efficiency and strengthens Indiaโs control over western river resources.

Suspension of Indus Treaty Reshapes River Management
On April 23, the Indian government officially paused its obligations under the Indus Waters Treaty. The action came shortly after a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials stated that national interest and water security now take precedence.
The suspension gives India complete control over the Chenab, Jhelum, and other western rivers. No longer bound by treaty clauses, India now alters its dam operations without notifying Pakistan.
India Dam Flushing Targets Sediment at Two Major Dams
Engineers launched the first monthly flushing at the Salal and Baglihar dams on the Chenab River. The operation removed more than 7.5 million cubic meters of sediment. This sediment had reduced turbine performance and limited power output.
Flushing improves water flow, raises energy capacity, and extends dam life. Officials confirmed the May operation took four days and saw full coordination between NHPC and the Central Water Commission.
Government Approves Long-Term Flushing Protocol
The Central Water Commission conducted a post-operation inspection. Its team endorsed monthly flushing as a permanent strategy. Officials will now issue Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all major hydro projects in northern India.
These guidelines will mandate monthly desilting, real-time monitoring, and safety checks. Engineers will also coordinate flushing with local power grid operators to maintain supply stability.
Strategic Benefits Beyond Energy Gains
Apart from energy gains, monthly flushing strengthens Indiaโs geopolitical control. Previously, any dam operation required prior notice to Pakistan under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. That clause no longer applies.
This shift allows India to adapt rapidly during emergencies like flooding or cross-border threats. Senior government officials view the new policy as essential to Indiaโs river sovereignty.
Flushing May Boost Hydropower Production
Current projections show that the dam flushing will restore 15โ20% of lost turbine output. The Salal and Baglihar projects together produce over 1,500 megawatts. With clear intakes and silt-free flow, engineers expect a steady rise in generation capacity.
Energy analysts believe this gain will help stabilize power grids across Jammu, Punjab, and Delhi NCR during peak summer demand.
Environmental Safeguards Remain in Place
While the policy focuses on utility and control, authorities also stress ecological care. The Ministry of Environment has ordered sediment discharge modeling. These models help prevent sudden silt surges in downstream zones.
Additionally, local biodiversity boards will monitor water quality and fish migration. Officials aim to balance strategic interests with ecological responsibility.
