Pakistan used drones, long-range weapons, loitering munitions to attack India’s military sites: Govt

May 10, 2025 โ€” New Delhi, India’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed that Pakistan deployed drones, long-range missiles, and loitering munitions in coordinated attacks targeting Indian military installations across Jammu, Punjab, and Kashmir. This marks a significant escalation in hostilities between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.

Coordinated Drone and Missile Strikes

According to Indian officials, Pakistan launched a series of drone and missile strikes on May 7 and 8, targeting key military facilities, including airbases in Pathankot and Udhampur. India’s S-400 missile defense system successfully intercepted several incoming threats, marking its first combat deployment.

Lieutenant General D.P. Pandey, commander of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, stated, “The drones and explosives used for aerial attacks cannot be assembled on the roadside and are likely to be state-supported systems.”

Retaliatory Measures and Escalation

In response to the attacks, India conducted Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) operations, targeting Pakistani air defense systems in Lahore. Indian forces also launched armed drones against four air defense sites in Pakistan, reportedly destroying a Pakistani air defense radar.

Pakistan’s military claimed to have shot down 12 Indian drones that allegedly intruded into its airspace, targeting locations including Karachi and Lahore. The Pakistani government denied initiating the conflict and accused India of attacking civilian zones, resulting in 31 deaths.

Civilian Impact and International Response

The cross-border attacks have resulted in significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. India reported that Pakistani artillery fire killed 15 Indian civilians, while Pakistan accused India of causing civilian deaths through missile strikes.

Both countries have expressed a willingness to de-escalate if the other reciprocates. International actors, including the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, have urged restraint and offered mediation.

Strategic Implications and Future Outlook

The recent attacks underscore the evolving nature of warfare, with drones and loitering munitions playing a central role. Analysts warn that the integration of these technologies into military operations could lower the threshold for conflict and increase the risk of miscalculation.

As both nations mobilize ground forces and enhance border security, the international community watches closely, hoping for a diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation between these nuclear-armed neighbors.
