David Attenborough Launches ‘Revive Our Ocean’: Protecting 30% of World’s Oceans

To address the escalating crisis amidst the marine ecosystems, biologist Sir David Attenborough has launched the Revive Our Ocean initiative. It is a global effort to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. Backed by NGOs Dynamic Planet and National Geographic’s Pristine Seas program, the initiative aims to sanction coastal communities to establish marine protected areas (MPAs). This will ensure the that ocean conservation can drive economic prosperity. 

The Urgency of Ocean Protection

Overfishing, climate change, and habitat destruction have pushed marine biodiversity to a capping point. Countries like the UK, Mexico, Indonesia, and the Philippines are witnessing severe declines in fish stocks and coral reef degradation, threatening both ecosystems and livelihoods. Currently, only 8% of the ocean is protected. This remains far short of the “30 by 30” target by nearly every nation under the 2023 Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement. Sir David Attenborough seeks to close this gap by advancing the creation of 190,000 MPAs globally. These reserves would ban destructive practices like bottom trawling and industrial fishing. This will allow marine life to recover while boosting sustainable industries such as tourism and small-scale fisheries. 

A Design for Community-Led Conservation

Revive Our Ocean adopts a unique model focused on providing local communities with tools to design and manage MPAs. The first strategy includes providing an “MPA How-To” guide and access to marine protection experts. Another one highlight studies showing that MPAs increase fishing yields and tourism revenue. The initial efforts focus on seven nations including Turkey, Greece, and Portugal where overfishing and climate impacts are critical. 

A Cinematic Call to Action: Ocean with David Attenborough

Coinciding with the initiative, Attenborough’s upcoming documentary, Ocean, premieres globally on May 8, 2025, days before his 99th birthday. Produced by Silverback Films and Open Planet Studios, the film showcases wonderful underwater cinematography with a message of hope: how MPAs can restore marine ecosystems. The documentary also underscores the ocean’s role in climate regulation and food security. Hence, this will urge viewers to support the Global Ocean Treaty. As Attenborough states: “If we save the sea, we save our world.”
