NHRC and Governor Visit Malda Relief Camp to Support Murshidabad Riot Victims

A National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team visited a relief camp at Par Lalpur High School in Malda on Friday to meet people displaced by the recent communal violence in Murshidabad. The violence, which occurred on April 11 and 12, 2025, was sparked by protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act and resulted in three deaths and significant property damage in areas like Shamsherganj, Suti, Dhulian, and Jangipur.

The NHRC took independent action to investigate the situation due to its severity and sent a fact-finding team to Malda. The team interacted with displaced families, many of whom fled to Malda or Jharkhand’s Pakur district fearing for their safety. The NHRC has requested a detailed inquiry report within three weeks to address the crisis.

On the same day, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited the Malda relief camp, ignoring Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s request to postpone his trip. Bose aimed to verify ground reports by meeting victims, visiting hospitals, and inspecting relief camps. “I will listen to the grievances of those in the camps and take proactive steps to address their needs,” he said. He plans to visit Murshidabad on Saturday to continue his assessment. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) criticized the visit, alleging it was a BJP-backed attempt to stir unrest.

Additionally, Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), began a two-day tour of Malda and Murshidabad to evaluate the impact on women and children. She expressed shock at their condition, stating, “The NCW has formed an inquiry committee to speak with victims and submit a detailed report.” The NCW team will meet district officials and visit Kolkata on Sunday to discuss further steps.

The Calcutta High Court has directed central forces to remain in Murshidabad to maintain law and order, while the state government claims the situation is now under control. Over 270 people have been arrested for alleged involvement in the violence.
