Murshidabad Violence 2025: NCW Probe into Women’s Safety Crisis Amid Riots

KOLKATA: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has raised strong concern over reports of women facing molestation during the recent violence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. These violent events unfolded during Muslim-led protests against the Waqf Amendment Act.

In a swift response, NCW formed a four-member inquiry team headed by Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar. The delegation will visit Samserganj, Jafrabad, and nearby villages on April 19 to gather testimonies from the affected women and assess their living conditions.

Hundreds of Displaced Women Flee Across River Amid Murshidabad Violence 2025

According to NCW’s statement, many women from Mandirpara in Dhuliyan were allegedly assaulted during the chaos. With homes ransacked and safety compromised, numerous women crossed the Bhagirathi River into Malda district in search of refuge. The women, traumatized and displaced, now live in fear and uncertainty.

The inquiry team includes BJP leader and NCW member Archana Majumdar and NCW Deputy Secretary Shivani Dey. Their objective is to document survivors’ experiences and press for urgent rehabilitation and justice.

Political Blame Game Deepens as NCW Visits Murshidabad

Just before this development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused BJP leaders of enabling criminal elements from Bangladesh to enter India and fuel the riots. She made these remarks during a meeting with Muslim religious leaders in Kolkata.

During five days of escalating violence in Jangipur sub-division, three people were killed. A father and son were lynched, and another man died during crossfire between mobs and security personnel.

While the BJP welcomed NCW’s involvement and showcased some of the affected women at a press meet in Kolkata, TMC leaders strongly opposed the inquiry. Jay Prakash Majumdar, TMC’s state vice-president, claimed the BJP orchestrated the riots and called the NCW’s visit politically motivated.
