Shock Return: David Cameron Named UK Foreign Secretary in Surprise Cabinet Reshuffle

In a stunning political comeback, former British Prime Minister David Cameron has been appointed Foreign Secretary by PM Rishi Sunak.
The sensational return comes seven years after Cameron resigned as prime minister and MP following the UK’s vote to leave the European Union.
Sunak sacked the controversial Suella Braverman as Home Secretary amid protests, replacing her with James Cleverly before shocking Westminster by naming Cameron as the new Foreign Secretary.
At 57, Cameron has been made a life peer to enable him to re-enter government where he led the Conservative Party for 11 years. He said he “gladly accepted” the role to assist with “vital challenges” ahead.
The reshuffle is Sunak’s first major change since taking office in October 2022. Appointments are expected to reward loyalists and promote younger MPs as the Tories lag Labour in the polls ahead of a 2023 general election.
Cameron’s appointment signals Sunak wants his international experience leading government for 6 years. But his reputation was tarnished after lobbying for failed firm Greensill Capital post-politics.
Some question if the surprise return will sway voters, with 45% feeling negatively toward Cameron. Nonetheless, his profile brings heavyweight credentials to address foreign policy matters.
The audacious move is seen as “desperate” by critics. But Sunak likely hopes Cameron’s global clout and appeal to disaffected Tory centrists can aid the party’s election hopes.
