Delhi Government Cracks Down on Illegal Construction

New Delhi: The Delhi government has gone into full action mode after the tragic building collapse in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan area. On Monday morning, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta once again visited the accident site and conducted a high-level review of the ongoing relief work, security arrangements and administrative investigation.

The Chief Minister said in clear terms that there will be no compromise on the safety of Delhi’s citizens and those who are negligent, no matter how influential, will not be spared.

FIR Against Owner, Action Against Corrupt Officials

After inspecting the site, CM Rekha Gupta gave strict instructions to the officials. In this serious case of negligence, police have taken swift action and registered an FIR against the building owner.

Along with this, the Chief Minister has also taken a tough stand against the Municipal Corporation officials and staff whose negligence or collusion allowed this illegal construction to flourish. The CM has directed that whoever is found guilty in the investigation will face strict departmental and legal action with immediate effect.

Order to Seal All Five-Storey Buildings in Delhi

Illegal construction done by flouting norms and adding extra floors is believed to be the main reason behind the Satya Niketan tragedy. Taking a big and tough administrative decision, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered that all buildings with a fifth floor in Delhi be sealed with immediate effect.

In many areas, buildings taller than the permitted limits have been erected, which are not only against the Master Plan but have also become a major threat to the lives of people living nearby. The administration is now preparing a list of all such buildings and sealing action has been started on a war footing.

Intensive Checking of PGs and Other Buildings

A large number of Paying Guest (PG) accommodations and hostels operate in Satya Niketan and its surrounding areas for students and working professionals. In view of this accident, the CM has directed the local administration and police to conduct an intensive inspection of all PG and commercial buildings in the vicinity.

  • Fire safety standards will be strictly checked
  • Illegal use of basements and commercial activities will be stopped
  • If any building or PG is found violating rules or constructed against the sanctioned map, it will be sealed without any delay.

‘Negligence Will Not Be Tolerated’ – CM’s Message

During her visit, the Chief Minister also met local residents and assured them that the government stands with them in this hour of grief. She clarified that this campaign against those ignoring illegal construction and safety norms will continue until law is fully enforced in the city.

This strict step by the government has created panic among land mafias and illegal builders who were thriving by taking advantage of administrative laxity. The incident has once again raised serious questions on the safety system and compliance of building construction rules in the capital, for which the government is now working on a permanent and strict solution.
