Prime Minister Modi’s Millet Anthem Nominated for Grammy: A Global Tribute to India’s Nutritional Wonder

In an unexpected musical feat, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stormed into the global music scene with his song “Abundance In Millets,” securing a coveted nomination for the Grammy Awards in the Best Global Music Performance category.
This collaborative masterpiece with Grammy-winning Indian-American singer Falguni Shah, popularly known as Falu, and musician Gaurav Shah, features Modi passionately advocating for millets, positioning India as the world’s leading producer and second-largest exporter of this gluten-free supergrain. Since Modi’s government assumed power in 2014, there has been a concerted effort to boost millet production and consumption.
“Millets are a wonder,” croon Falu and Shah in the anthem, contemplating the transformative potential of this nutritional powerhouse. The song faces stiff competition in the Best Global Music Performance category, alongside tracks from global icons like Nigerian Afrobeat sensations Burna Boy and Davido, Mexico’s rising star Silvana Estrada, and Franco-Lebanese trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf.
Falu disclosed that the genesis of the song was Modi’s brainchild, with the Prime Minister actively contributing to its creation, driven by his vision to combat global hunger and poverty. The anthem, as described by Falu, was “written and performed with Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help farmers grow millets and help end world hunger.”
Modi, 73, lauded the project as “very creative” and expressed confidence that it “will inspire more people to embrace millets for healthy living.” India’s commitment to millets is underscored by its proposal to the United Nations to declare 2023 as the International Year of Millets. Additionally, the G20 summit in September featured an all-vegetarian dinner dominated by millet.
Once a dietary staple for millennia in many Indian regions, millet faced a decline during the 1960s “green revolution” when high-yield varieties of wheat and rice gained prominence. However, the nominated anthem seeks to rebrand millet, shedding its association with rural poverty.
“The shared efforts of our farmers and us will adorn India and the world’s prosperity with a new radiance,” Modi declares in the song, sampled from one of his speeches.
The fate of “Abundance In Millets” will be revealed at the Grammy Awards ceremony scheduled for February 4, 2023. Don’t miss the chance to witness this historic moment as Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a healthier and more prosperous world takes center stage at the Grammy Awards.
