Describing the launch of the Ministry of Cooperation as a ‘historic move’, the Centre said it will help realise the vision of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’. Amit Shah to lead this ministry.
Fulfilling a long-pending demand, the Centre has now created a separate Ministry of Cooperation to be led by none other than Union Home Minister Amit Shah, indicating the importance that the Narendra Modi government is attaching to this sector.
The Ministry of Co-operation is a ministry under the Government of India which was formed in July 2021. The ministry provides a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country. The ministry’s creation was announced on 6 July 2021 along with its vision statement of Sahkar se samriddhi (transl.โProsperity from cooperation). Before the creation of this ministry, the objectives of this ministry were looked after by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The ministry works in strengthening co-operatives at the grassroot level, working to streamline processes for ‘Ease of doing business’ for co-operatives and enabling the development of Multi-State Co-operatives (MSCS). The same was initially announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the 2021 Union budget.
The new ministry was also created in the backdrop of ongoing farmer protests against the new farm laws. The movement has now significant political overtones and are aimed at consolidating the opposition against the BJP in poll-bound states of Punjab, Uttarakhand and UP in 2022.
โThis ministry will provide a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country. It will help deepen cooperatives as a true people-based movement reaching upto the grassroots,โ the cabinet secretariat said in a 6 July statement.
โIn a historic move, a separate โMinistry of Co-operationโ has been created by the Modi Government for realizing the vision of โSahkar se Samriddhiโ. In our country, a Co-operative based economic development model is very relevant where each member works with a spirit of responsibility,โ the cabinet secretariat’ statement said and added, โThe Ministry will work to streamline processes for โEase of doing businessโ for co-operatives and enable development of Multi-State Co-operatives (MSCS).โ
