Kolkata Weather Update: Cloudy Skies, Rain and Thunderstorms Likely on August 20

Kolkata, August 20, 2026: Kolkata is expected to experience a largely cloudy and humid day on Thursday, with intermittent rain and the possibility of thunderstorms. The maximum temperature is likely to remain around 33–34°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to be close to 27°C.

The latest weather observations from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata, showed a temperature of 30.2°C with 88% humidity at 8:30 am on Thursday, indicating the continued humid conditions over the city.

Rain and thunderstorms

Rainfall activity is expected to continue intermittently across Kolkata and other parts of Gangetic West Bengal. The IMD’s broader forecast has indicated fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal during August 17–23, keeping the region under an active monsoon pattern.

Recent weather developments have also contributed to the unsettled conditions. An IMD bulletin issued on August 19 tracked a depression over north Jharkhand and adjoining areas, while an earlier bulletin recorded the system over coastal West Bengal and adjoining regions.

For Kolkata, the latest available forecasts point more towards light or intermittent showers rather than a prolonged spell of extremely heavy rain. Localised thunderstorms and lightning, however, remain possible, particularly when rain-bearing clouds develop over the city.

Humidity likely to add to discomfort

Despite the possibility of rain, temperatures are expected to remain relatively high. Combined with high atmospheric moisture, this could make conditions feel sultry and uncomfortable, especially during breaks between showers.

The city has also experienced substantial rainfall in recent days. Reports indicated that several parts of Kolkata recorded 50–100 mm of rain over a 24-hour period around August 18, raising concerns about localised waterlogging and disruptions to commuting.

Advisory for residents

Residents are advised to carry umbrellas or rain protection while travelling and remain alert for sudden thunderstorms. During lightning activity, people should avoid exposed or open areas and seek shelter in a safe building.

Commuters should also be prepared for possible traffic slowdowns and temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas following intense spells of rain.

With the monsoon remaining active over Gangetic West Bengal, Kolkata is likely to see a mix of cloudy skies, humid conditions and intermittent showers through the day, with the possibility of thunderstorms adding to the weather uncertainty.
