31 May 2026: Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee, on his first public foray outside Kalight after the party’s ouster from the office, was assaulted and abused by a huge crowd of protesters in Sonarpur on Saturday when he was trying to reach the home of a Trinamool worker, who was allegedly killed in post-poll violence.

As he proceeded to walk the 600 meter muddy street that leads to the home of Sanju Karmakar under ward 9 of Sonarpur Rajput  municipality, a huge number of protestors attacked him. They were shouting “chor, chor” , pelting him with eggs, chappals, stones and they tore his shirt, many of them punched him in his chest, and slapped him.

Meanwhile Abhishek had to wear a helmet to protect himself from the anger of the mob. The abuse continued for about 10 minutes in the absence of police. However his party workers tried to protect him from the mass and somehow managed to get him to Karmakar’s house.

He stayed there for more than an hour, the angry crowd camped outside, threatening to break down the door. He was finally escorted out by central police forces and some local cops.

“It was a planned attack arranged by BJP workers. They wanted to kill me. Everyone knew I was coming”. The SP, IC  and other officials had been informed, said Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday as reported by Times of India. He further added that he would approach the High Court and Supreme Court and move a motion for breach of privilege as a Lok Sabha MP.

Trinamool Congress ex Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee shared the video of the assault on X and wrote. “Shame on you BJP” reported on Saturday by Times of India. Several TMC party members complained about the downgrading of Abhishek’s Z-plus security after BJP came in power.

Baruipur SP Shubhendra Kumar said that cops and central forces personnel were sent the moment information of the assault was received, on Saturday reported by Hindustan Times.

BJP clarified that party workers were not behind such attacks. There may be political clashes but such incidents are not desirable in a healthy democratic society. BJP further said that no association of such incidents should be made with the party. Such an act of mass public protest signals significant regional tension and highlights the volatile nature of the current political climate.
