Controversy in Kasba: Police Station In-Charge Suspended for List Tampering

A major development that has come to the fore with regard to administrative malpractice before the West Bengal Assembly Elections scheduled for 2026 is the suspension of the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kasba Police Station on serious charges. The Officer-in-Charge is said to have tampered with the official documents to deliberately strike out the name of an infamous history-sheeter named Biswajit Poddar, popularly referred to as Sona Pappu, from the list of accused involved in a serious criminal offense.
Suspension over Tampering with Official Documents:
Following complaints that the notorious Sona Pappu had been left out of official documents regarding recent violent incidents in South Kolkata, it came to light that the OC of Kasba had reportedly used his power to shield the gangster.
Sona Pappu, who has a record of more than 15 cases involving murders, extortion, and offenses under the Arms Act, has been at the center stage of all this mayhem. Specifically, he has been implicated in the case of the Golpark gang war that erupted in February 2026, when explosives were thrown and gunshots fired amid a fight among locals. In spite of his regular posts on social media platforms, particularly his latest “Facebook Live” denying any wrongdoing, he continues to elude local law enforcement for months now.
Administrative and Political Consequences:
This move comes at a time of high tension in West Bengal. The ED has increased its offensive against him through raids on six different premises associated with him for a huge racket of land grabbing and money laundering.
- The ED Angle: As per federal investigations, Pappu headed an extortion ring operating under the disguise of the real estate business, and was siphoning out his ill-gotten gains into the pockets of “influential” politicians.
- Role of Election Commission: In light of the upcoming polls in 2026, the Election Commission has decided to give an extensive reshuffling of the state’s police personnel. The suspension of the Kasba OC is viewed by observers as a strong indication of the administrationโs zero tolerance towards any “police-criminal nexus.”
Public Backlash:
For quite some time, the people of Kasba and Ballygunge have been demanding stringent action against the criminal gang led by Sona Pappu, alleging him of exploiting a 100-man youth gang to snatch their land in dispute. The move of suspending the OC has brought relief to citizens who have accused the police station of overlooking the criminal activities of Pappuโs gang.
As the state CID and the top brass of the Kolkata Police conduct the internal investigation, all eyes are now on whether there were any other cops protecting Pappu, one of Kolkataโs most wanted criminals.
