Bengaluru Debt Horror: Family Tragedy Unfolds as Financial Distress Leads to Double Murder-Suicide Attempt

BENGALURU, India — A devastating family tragedy occurred in Mallenahalli near Attibele on the night of Saturday, March 28, 2026, when a 26-year-old man identified as Mohan M.R. allegedly slit the throats of his mother, sister, and nephew before attempting to take his own life. According to local authorities, the incident took place between 10:00 PM and 10:30 PM and resulted in the immediate deaths of Mohan’s mother, Asha (55), and his sister, Varshitha (32). Mohan and his 11-year-old nephew, Mayank, were found with critical injuries and were rushed to a private hospital in Attibele, where they remain in emergency care.
The extreme act appears to have been driven by overwhelming financial distress and personal hardship. Investigations by the Attibele police revealed that the family had been struggling with significant debts, partly due to Varshitha’s 18-month battle with a brain tumor and losses Mohan incurred in a chit fund business. Before the attack, the family reportedly recorded a distressing video explaining their inability to cope with the mounting pressure from creditors and shared it with relatives. Neighbors, alerted by sounds of distress, broke into the locked house to find a gruesome scene, leading to the discovery of the deceased and the two survivors. A case has been registered as police continue to investigate the role of harassment by lenders in this tragic event.
