Dhoni’s Final IPL Season? Irfan Pathan Fuels Speculation Ahead of New Campaign
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League could be the last time fans see Mahendra Singh Dhoni playing for Chennai Super Kings.
Dhoni, now 44, retired from international cricket years ago but has continued to feature in the IPL for CSK, though his role has gradually reduced. With the franchise reportedly bringing in Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals, speculation has intensified about the veteran wicketkeeper-batter further stepping back from regular on-field duties.
Speaking on the show Game Plan on JioHotstar, Pathan said Dhoni remains the heart of the franchise.
“CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey, and it’s hard to imagine CSK and the IPL without him,” Pathan said.
He also praised Dhoni’s commitment and preparation ahead of the season. According to Pathan, Dhoni appears fit and ready after joining the team’s training camp in Chennai.
The former captain has already started training with the CSK squad, which is currently led by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Ms Dhoni: Mentor and Leader in the Dressing Room
Pathan suggested that Dhoni’s influence may extend beyond playing matches this season. His experience and leadership could play a key role in guiding the team’s younger players.
“Dhoni will play an important role in bringing everyone together. I’m not sure how many matches he will play, but his presence in the dressing room will help the team a lot,” Pathan said.
He also noted that Samson could benefit from Dhoni’s guidance, especially if he becomes part of CSK’s leadership group alongside Gaikwad.
A Perfect Farewell?
Questions about Dhoni’s fitness, batting position and the number of matches he will play are likely to continue throughout the season. However, Pathan believes the CSK management will handle his involvement carefully.
He added that the franchise would ideally want to give their legendary captain a fitting farewell by winning another IPL title — which would be their sixth trophy.
For now, fans will be hoping to see Dhoni once again don the iconic yellow jersey and provide a few more memorable moments in what could be his final IPL appearance.
