Modi Extends Warm Wishes to Rob Jetten as He Takes Helm as Dutch Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Rob Jetten on becoming Netherlands’ Prime Minister, reaffirming commitment to strengthening bilateral India- Dutch relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended warm congratulations to Rob Jetten on assuming office as the new Prime Minister of the Netherlands, underscoring the strong and multifaceted partnership between India and the European nation. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, PM Modi wrote:

“Congratulations Mr. Rob Jetten on assuming office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands. India and the Netherlands share an extensive relationship across diverse sectors. I look forward to working closely with you to add further momentum to the growing ties between our two countries and people.”

The meesage reflects a continued Indian interest in deepening cooperation with the Netherlands across areas such as trade, investment, technology and cultural exchange. Modi’s statement also conveyed confidence that bilateral ties will gain new impetus under Jetten’s leadership.

Rob Jetten, 38, took the oath of office on February 23, 2026, becoming the youngest prime minister in Dutch history and the head of a newly formed minority coalition goverment in The Hague. The coalition – comprising his centrist Democrats 66 (D66) party along with the Christian Democrats (CDA) and the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) – took months of negotiations to finalize and holds 66 of the 150 seats in the lower house of the Dutch Parliament.

Jetten’s leadership maarks a generational shift in Dutch politics, and his administration is expected to focus on progressive policy priorities while navigating the complexities of governing without a parliament majority. Alongside Modi’s congratulatory message, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also extended best wishes to the newly appointed Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen, expressing optimism about closer cooperation under the new Dutch government.

The exchange of congratulatory messages follows international diplomatic norms and underscores the Netherlands’ role as a key partner for many countries, including India, within the broader context of European and global cooperation.
