Supreme Court Cracks Down on Bengal: Show-Cause Notice Issued to DGP Over SIR Violence

The Supreme Court of India gave a stern show-cause notice to the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal on February 9, 2026, in a major judicial intervention into the electoral integrity of this region. This has come after shocking violence reports and administrative failures concerning Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

The Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant was very much concerned when reports made by the Election Commission of India (ECI), of mass-burning of objection forms and intimidation of officials, were made known to them. On requiring a personal affidavit, the Court challenged the reasons why the West Bengal police did not file FIR, honour past law and order directives. To avoid any citizen being disenfranchised by these disruptions, the Supreme Court formally moved the last time of electoral roll publication to February 21, 2026, instead of the previously scheduled February 14, 2026.

The court also ordered the West Bengal government to supply 8,555 Group B officers to lend a hand to the ECI in an attempt to enhance administrative capacity. Such officials shall report to their respective Electoral officers of the District by 5.00 PM on February 10. Another important point of jurisdiction made by the Court: in spite of the assistance of state-appointed micro-observers, final orders on claims and objections are still issued by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs). It was stressed that the Chief Justice would have a zero tolerance policy to any obstacles, so that judiciary will make sure that the SIR exercise is not impeded.

This decision is a critical protection of democratic practises within the state, since the revision of the voter list is to be transparent and devoid of political influence and threats. This is an official statement by the Supreme Court, which assures the citizens and political stakeholders that the rule of law shall be made to have its way over the local volatility.
