Bangladesh Interim Government Under Fire as Elections Draw Near

As Bangladesh heads towards its National  Election scheduled for February 12, 2026, the country’s interim government, led by Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus, is facing mounting criticism over a series of major policy decisions taken in the final weeks of its tenure.

Economists, political analysts and opposition leaders have expressed concern over what they describe as a rush to approve large-scale contracts and policy measures, actions traditionally undertaken by an elected government with a fresh mandate. Critics argue that such last-minute decisions could have long-term financial and administrative consequences for the next administration.

Among the key issues drawing scrutiny are the approval of high-value procurement contracts and infrastructure projects worth tens of thousands of crores, along with proposed energy and defence procurements. The government has also floated a Ninth Pay Scale, which analysts warn could impose a substantial recurring burden on public finances.

Opposition figures contend that these measures risk constraining the policy choices of the incoming elected government, effectively tying its hands on fiscal and development priorities.

Transparency concerns have also been raised following reports that the interim administration moved forward on a trade agreement with the United States under a non-disclosure framework.

Defending its actions, the interim government has maintained that the decisions were taken in the national interest and are necessary to ensure continuity in development and economic stability.

The developments have intensified political debate in the run-up to the election, with calls for restraint and greater accountability during the transition period.
