Kolkata Police Nab Inter-State Drug Trafficker, Seize Cannabis Worth Lakhs
A large quantity of ganja has been recovered in a significant anti-drug operation in Kolkata. The incident took place recently when the smugglers were trying to bring the contraband from Odisha to West Bengal. The officers of Kolkata Police or concerned law enforcement agencies acted on specific information and busted an inter-state drug trafficking racket.
Police seized a large number of weapons and vehicles from them. Two persons have been arrested in connection with the seizure. This operation proves that the police are active against inter-state drug trafficking rings. Such incidents are frequent and law enforcement agencies are constantly on the lookout to curb the illegal trade of narcotics. This special rescue operation is a warning to drug dealers and a reflection of the commitment of the police to the security of the state.
Such incidents highlight the harmful effects of drugs on society and the need for hard work by law enforcement agencies to control it. The police have been able to stop this huge amount of drugs before they reach the market, which is a positive for public health. Even though these traffickers have been caught, it is still an ongoing process to find the masterminds of this racket. It is hoped that this success will help to root out even bigger drug trafficking rings in the future.
The Kolkata Police has recovered around 125 kilograms of ganja in a recent raid. Although the approximate market value of the recovered ganja has not been specifically mentioned in the main body of the news, its market value could be around Rs 10 to 15 lakh based on the quantity of ganja recovered in other similar raids. According to the police, a large quantity of drugs was being smuggled from Odisha to Kolkata.
Investigations are underway to find out how important members of this inter-state drug trafficking ring are to the two arrested persons. Initial investigation revealed that they had procured ganja from Odisha and were bringing it to Kolkata.
Police suspect that they are not just carriers, but an active part of the drug supply chain. Law enforcement agencies often try to find the mastermind by obtaining information from the carriers (who usually work for small sums of money). Other operations showed that the police were able to arrest the carriers as well as members of the main gang. In this particular case, the police are interrogating the accused and trying to find out more information about the other members of the gang and its main source and destination.
In a recent raid by the Kolkata Police, two people have been arrested with a large amount of cannabis. Investigations have revealed that the smuggling syndicate was involved in several areas and routes in Odisha and West Bengal. Initially, it is believed that the contraband was procured from south Odisha districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati or Kandhamal, which are known for ganja cultivation. The smugglers were transporting the ganja to West Bengal in a goods vehicle. The police were keeping a close watch on the main streets of the city. The police intercepted the vehicle near the AJC Bose Road intersection in Kolkata. The plan was to transport the ganja to the Khidirpur area of Kolkata.
The two arrested are residents of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. One of them is a resident of Durgapur village and the other is a resident of Durgapur village. Police are interrogating the accused to find out the motive behind the crime and their possible international links. The investigation into the recent drug recovery operation by the Kolkata Police is still in its early stages. Police could not identify the mastermind or other members of the gang.
Currently, the police are interrogating the two arrested persons. On the basis of information received from them, efforts are being made to identify the kingpin of this trafficking racket and other members of Odisha and West Bengal. Investigators are verifying information about the source of the drugs and the final supply point in Kolkata. Since a large quantity of drugs have been recovered, the police are trying to identify the higher authorities of this drug trafficking chain as well as whether there is any international connection with it. More members of the gang are likely to be arrested later. Kolkata Police and other law enforcement agencies are going to undertake coordinated surveillance and strategic planning in the future to curb inter-state drug trafficking. These measures are mainly based on increasing technology dependency and coordination with neighbouring states.
According to police sources, CCTV surveillance will be increased at the main entry and exit points of the city. Drones can be used for surveillance to identify the route of cannabis cultivation in the suspected areas along the Odisha border. Besides, the use of modern mobile tracking technology will also be increased to track the movement of drug traffickers.
On the other hand, coordination is being enhanced with the police of Odisha, Jharkhand and other neighbouring states for information sharing and joint operations. Emphasis will be laid on collecting advance information on trafficking through regular meetings. The checking will be intensified by using modern scanning instruments at the checkposts to detect the kind of secret chambers that the smugglers are creating in the vehicles. The main objective of the police is not only to arrest the carriers, but also to break the masterminds of this gang and their entire financial network.
