Death of Hindu Teen in Bangladesh Sparks Renewed Concern Over Minority Safety

The death of a 19-year-old Hindu youth in Bangladesh has once again raised serious concerns over the safety of religious minorities in the country. Joy Mohapatra died at a hospital in Sylhet on Friday after allegedly consuming poison following a dispute over unpaid mobile phone instalments in Derai Upazila of Sunamganj district.

According to family members, Joy was allegedly assaulted, humiliated and provoked by a local shopkeeper over a delayed payment of 500 Bangladeshi taka for a mobile phone purchased on credit. His mother claimed that the shopkeeper forced him to ingest poison, an allegation that has been denied by the accused.

Local residents said that Joy had bought the mobile phone for 5,500 taka around three months ago, of which 2,500taka remained unpaid, leading to the dispute. Police officials confirmed that the matter is under investigation, though no formal case has been registered so far.

The incident is being reported as the eighth killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh within less than a month, amid growing reports of attacks and harassment targeting minority communities. The case has intensified calls for stronger measures to ensure the safety and protection of religious minorities in the country.
