Mausam Benazir Noor Returns to Congress, Dealing Early-Year Blow to Trinamool

The Trinamool Congress suffered a major blow at the beginning of the year. One of its senior leaders, Miusum Benazir Noor, officially rejoined the Indian National Congress. Her action has initiated a revival debate in West Bengal’s political circles. This is happening especially as the state enters an election-oriented period.

Mausam resigned from Congress on January 28, 2019. She did so to join All India Trinamool Congress. However, she returned to her former party at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi. It was held in the presence of senior congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Shubhankar Sarkar. Markedly, Mausam is a Rajya Sabha member of Trinamool Congress at the moment. The West Bengal Pradesh Congress President welcomed her back. He said it was a homecoming. She would only get to see more through the development. People have just watched the trailer only. He also added that politics in Bengal is so fiercely contested that it is causing the religious polarisation of society. In his opinion, the ruling party in the state has been unable to offer a positive vision to West Bengal. The party in power at the Centre also failed in this regard. He charged the BJP with trying to bring instability instead of governance. He also accuses the Trinamool congress of having failed to bring any development to the state people. He referred to the potential comeback of a grassroots-based and aggressive youthful leader like Mausum. Such a leader, who believes in the ideals of Gani Khan Choudhury, would significantly boost Congress.

Upon returning to the party formally, Speaking, Mausam credited the Congress leadership with its warm reception of her back. She added that she was privileged to go back as a member of Congress family and Gani Khan Choudhury family. She pointed out the importance of unity. She said that the joint effort should enhance the legacy and ideology of Gani Khan Choudhury. This belief led her to make a decision to rejoin Congress.

Mausam affirmed that she had already resigned from Trinamool Congress. She had forwarded her resignation to the chairperson of this party, Mamata Banerjee. She also stated that she has prepared a resignation letter to her Rajya Sabha and will submit it on Monday. She needed to declare her commitment. She stated that she would work relentlessly to bring back the Congress. Malda was a focus of her efforts. She said that people there still held on to the values of secularism. They also believed in development and peace inherent in the party.
