Kavach Train Protection System Commissioned on Over 2,000 Route Kilometres

On Tuesday, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has informed in Lok Sabha that over 2,000 route kilometres of the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, Kavach, have been commissioned on Indian Railways, marking a significant step towards enhancing passenger safety and operational efficiency.

Replying to supplementary questions during Question Hour, the Minister said that the Kavach system has so far been installed on 4,154 locomotives across the railway network. He highlighted that the rollout of the safety system is progressing at a rapid pace.

Mr Vaishnaw also noted that capacity-building efforts are being undertaken alongside implementation. More than 40,000 technicians and operators have already been trained to operate and maintain the Kavach system, ensuring its effective deployment.

Developed indigenously, Kavach is designed to prevent train collisions by automatically applying brakes in critical situations, thereby significantly improving rail safety. 

The government has been steadily expanding its coverage as part of Indian Railways’ broader modernisation and safety enhancement initiatives.
