Delhi Fire: Horrific Blaze, Four-Storey Building Charred, At Least Four Dead, Area Mourns

Delhi Fire: A devastating and horrific blaze engulfed a four-storey residential-cum-commercial building in the congested Sangam Vihar area of South Delhi on a recent Saturday evening, leading to a tragic loss of life and leaving the entire community in mourning. The inferno claimed the lives of at least four individuals and left several others with serious injuries.
According to police reports, the fire started at approximately 6:30 PM, and it started on the ground floor of a large shoe shop within the mixed-use building. The highly flammable merchandise that comprised the shop such as leather, rubber and adhesives made the fire spread like wildfire to the four-storey building enveloping all the occupants in minutes.
The Delhi fire service was on time and deployed a number of engines at the location. Even after that, the severe fire was a significant challenge. It took the firefighters more than one hour to control the fire and prevent its spreading to the adjacent buildings. The fire was put out sometime around 8:00 PM, but the damage was already disastrous.
The effects were disastrous. The fire blackened the entire building. The wounded were taken to a hospital nearby in ambulances to seek emergency care. There have been four deaths, some of them being female and many others are in critical states.
Police have identified that there were two victims, Satyendra, the owner of the building and his sister, Anita. The other two have not been confirmed with regard to their identities. Sangam Vihar is deeply grieved with the sudden loss.
The investigators are on the way to define the precise cause. It is initially expected that it has spread very fast out of the shop floor, however, forensic units are investigating the location to find a definitive ignition source and how the structure of the building could have facilitated such rapid progression. The police will also inspect on whether the building was fire-safe, a common problem in busy, unsplanned areas in Delhi. The accident reveals the extreme necessity to enforce stricter fire-safety measures in commercial-residential complexes.
The society is still disturbed, awaiting the investigation news and grieving the death of neighbours.
