Gyanesh Kumar cannot sit in Delhi and give gyan while the situation turns otherwise on ground in Bengal

The attack by Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya on Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar is a major turn as the BJP in West Bengal has long been known to protect the Election Commission when it is being accused, especially by the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC). This is a tactical shift, which probably is a pressure tactic, to respond to mounting accusations of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Context of the Dispute The dispute is based on the fact that Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is going on in West Bengal, which the Election Commission is doing to refresh the lists of voters before the 2026 Assembly elections.

Position of TMC

The chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, and her party have been opposing the SIR process since weeks, saying it is unplanned, chaotic, and dangerous and creates unbearable pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs). The TMC states that 28 individuals including the BLOs have lost their lives because of the work stress and pressure. They also accuse the EC of conspiring with the BJP in order to rig the voter list and enrol illegal immigrants. first stand of BJP: Firstly, the Bengal BJP had rejected the allegations by Mamata Banerjee and defended the EC by claiming that the TMC was attempting to derail an otherwise legitimate constitutional exercise and was buying time to cover her vote banks.

What Has Changed?

The major turnaround has been the recent shift of the Bengal BJP toward the TMC position which was in opposition to the implementation of the SIR process, in this case, in terms of safety and working conditions of the BLOs. Allegations of Bhattacharya: Samik Bhattacharya now says that the ruling TMC is instilling an air of fear, coercion and intimidation on the BLOs in Bengal to such an extent that they can hardly carry out their responsibilities without casting the vote on either side. He demands that the CEC should have physical presence in the state, not to be at the helm of checking what is on the ground.

Pressure on the EC

EC has realized the concerns and sent a letter to the police top brass of Bengal to provide safety of poll officials. The EC also suspended four West Bengal officials due to allegedly tampering voter lists after a complaint on unauthorized additions.

A Prospective Pressure Tactic

There is a possible pressure tactic that could have been adopted by Bengal BJP as the direct attack of the CEC Gyanesh Kumar occurred immediately before the expiry of enumeration form submission deadline. By mentioning the same issues that the TMC presented regarding the state of affairs on the ground, the BJP, presumably, wants the ECI to take a more aggressive position or bring more central security forces into the revision process in order to make it fair and prevent the so-called manipulation of the state government apparatus. In essence, the two key parties are currently mounting pressure on the ECI, but at different levels, so as to make sure that the revised electoral roll is done in a way they consider as being fair and secure.
