SIR Issue : Over the SIR issue, Trinamool is taking to the streets — Mamata and Abhishek to lead a mega rally in the city on November 4.

Kolkata:  On the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) issue, the Trinamool Congress is now taking to the streets. On November 4, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool’s All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee will lead a mega rally in Kolkata.

The rally will begin from the B.R. Ambedkar statue and conclude at Jorasanko Thakur Bari. According to party sources, the event is not just a protest against the SIR process—it will also include a pledge to protect the Constitution and raise voices against anti-Bengal policies and injustice by the Centre.

Trinamool has alleged that the Election Commission is deliberately using the SIR process for political motives. Party insiders claim, “A conspiracy is underway to remove genuine voters’ names from the electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.”

Abhishek Banerjee had earlier warned that if any citizen’s voting rights were curtailed, Trinamool would take to the streets. That warning will be reflected in the upcoming mega protest rally on Tuesday.

At a press conference on October 28, Abhishek said, “The Election Commission is acting like an associate organization of the BJP. Announcing the SIR process suddenly during the festive season is an attempt to snatch away people’s fundamental rights.” He added, “Earlier, voters chose the government—now the government is choosing its voters.”

In a sharp jab, he also said, “The Lok Sabha elections were held just a year and a half ago. If you now think the voter list is flawed, first admit your failure. Resign, and then carry out the SIR.”

The core message of Trinamool’s mega rally is “Protect Voting Rights, Save the Constitution.” Party leaders said the event aims to alert the people of Bengal so that their names are not deleted from the voter list.

Along with the top leadership, state ministers, MLAs, and thousands of Trinamool workers are expected to join the rally. The Kolkata Police have already started preparations for security and traffic management.

Mamata Banerjee has long been vocal against the Centre’s policies and the Election Commission’s conduct. This protest, however, is expected to be a far stronger demonstration of dissent on the streets. According to party insiders, this movement will mark an important phase in Trinamool’s political strategy ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

Trinamool says the rally will emphasize three key messages — protecting voting rights, safeguarding the Constitution, and protesting against the Centre’s discrimination toward Bengal. Additionally, the issue of non-payment of MGNREGA (100 days’ work) funds will also be a major point of protest.

Political observers believe that with Mamata and Abhishek marching together, the rally will project a message of unity within the Trinamool and set the tone for the party’s future direction.

On November 4, Kolkata is set to witness a historic scene — the Chief Minister and her nephew marching shoulder to shoulder, carrying the message of defending the Constitution and democracy.
