The Association of Health Service Doctors, West Bengal (AHSD, WB), and the Joint Platform of Doctors, West Bengal (Doctors United for People’s Health Right & Dignity of Medical Profession) have stated they will not tolerate betrayal of justice referencing what they claim to have witnessed after the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College in August 2024.
The AHSD, through its General Secretary, Dr. Utpal Bandopadhyay, urged the Hon’ble Chief Minister to “act decisively, visibly, and without prejudice.” The WBJDF (West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Federation) expressed outrage and have stated that the lack of swift justice in previous cases is the reason perpetrators feel fearless.
The medical bodies have put forth a unified list of urgent demands:
โข Immediate formation of a Judicial Investigation Team (JIT) headed by a sitting or retired judge.
โข Swift and immediate arrest of all accused individuals without any political or administrative interference.
โข Complete protection and scientific preservation of the crime scene and all material evidence.
โข A transparent, rapid and unbiased investigation under continuous judicial oversight.
โข Accountability of institutional and law enforcement authorities for any delay or negligence.
โข Implementation of enforceable safety protocols across all medical and educational campuses.
โข Fast-track trial under stringent legal provisions to ensure exemplary punishment.
Both the AHSD and the Joint Platform of Doctors issued a strong warning that if justice is denied or delayed the entire medical community of West Bengal will be compelled to begin a statewide agitation. The WBJDF team plans to visit the college campus to provide support to the victim and the protesting students.
This incident underscores the urgent need for having stronger safety measures and quicker police response around educational institutions. While the investigation proceeds the focus remains on providing utmost care and support to the survivor and ensuring the perpetrators are punished under the full force of the law.
