In South Kolkata, a woman alleges she was sexually assaulted by a group inside a house.

According to the woman’s complaint, two men who had invited her to a house for a “birthday party” raped her. Chandan Malik and Debangshu Biswas have been charged with gang rape.

According to police on Sunday, September 7, 2025, two people allegedly gang-raped a 20-year-old woman in the Haridevpur neighborhood of Kolkata. The alleged incident happened on Friday, September 5, 2025, at a residence in Regent Colony.

The incident occurred in the Regent Park area on the southern outskirts of the city on Friday. The two suspects, who disappeared after the crime, were identified as Chandan Malik and Deep. Deep is said to be a government employee.

According to police sources, the survivor from Haridevpur claimed the assault occurred when Chandan took her to Deep’s house to celebrate her birthday.

“The woman’s birthday was on Friday. On that day, the accused, Chandan and Deep, took the victim to Deep’s flat. They had a meal there. She said that when she wanted to go home, the accused stopped her. They locked the door and gang-raped her, one of the police sources said.

The source added that the survivor finally managed to escape around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

After reaching home, she narrated the incident to her family, and on Saturday the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the relevant sections.

The officer said they have launched a search for the absconding accused.

The woman said in her complaint that she got to know Chandan a few months ago. He claimed to be the leader of a major Durga Puja committee in south Kolkata. Through him, she met Deep, and the three kept in touch.

She stated in her complaint that the two accused assured her of a role in the puja committee.

A law student reported being raped on the South Calcutta Law College campus on June 25. Police identified alumnus Monojit Mishra as the prime accused and later arrested him. Mishra had previously been the president of the college’s Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit, but the TMCP said it had not been associated with him for the past two years.

Last year, a trainee doctor’s rape and murder at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital sparked nationwide protests and came before these incidents. Earlier this year, a local court sentenced the accused, Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer, to life in prison.
