Kolkata Police Arrest One in Regent Park Gang-Rape Case
10 September-Kolkata, India: The Kolkata Police have arrested one suspect who is related to the gang rape of a 20-year-old girl, which took place in the Regent Park area of South Kolkata.
According to the police officials, the suspect has been identified as Chandan Mallick, who was arrested by the Kolkata Police after he was trying to flee from the Burdwan railway station late at night on Saturday.
How did the rape took place?
A 20-year-old girl, a resident of Haridevpur, was invited by the rape suspect Chandan and his friend Deep to celebrate her birthday party on Friday.
She also reported that both Chandan and Deep forcefully took her to celebrate her birthday in Deep’s flat, where both of them later sexually assaulted and raped her.
A police officer highlighted on the case and said “The survivor stated that she was taken to the flat, offered food, and later prevented from leaving. The accused locked the door and raped her.”
However, on Saturday, she later escaped from Chandan and Deep the next morning around 10:30 am and went home to inform her family about the situation, after which a FIR was lodged by the family members at the Regent Police Station.
The main suspect Chandan, was arrested by the Kolkata Police, while the second suspect, Deep who works in a government job, is still missing. The Regent Police station have deployed teams to track down the second suspect.
The 20-year-old girl who was the raped victim gave a statement which stated that “she had met Chandan a few months earlier when he introduced himself as the head of a prominent Durga Puja committee in south Kolkata.”
Both her raped suspects Chandan and Deep, also promised her that they would give her a huge duty in the puja committee.

However, this type of rape cases spread a new kind of warning among the female population in the city especially when the cases are of high profile.
In a similar case in the month of June, three men raped a female Law student inside the South Kolkata Law College campus, leading to the arrest of the main suspect Monojit Mishra.
According to the information by the National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB), Kolkata is termed as the safest metro city, especially for the female population, but the recent cases like this question the safety of the female population in the city.
