Bengaluru Man Burns Former Live-In Partner Alive After Dispute
Bengaluru, Karnataka
A shocking act of domestic violence unfolded on Saturday afternoon when a 50-year-old cab driver, Vittal, chased down his former live-in partner and set her on fire in broad daylight. The woman, Vanajakshi (35), later succumbed to her burn injuries in hospital.
Police reports say Vanajakshi was traveling with her current partner, Muniyappa (49), and an elderly relative when Vittal intercepted their car near Bannerghatta Road around 1 p.m. He doused the vehicle with petrol from a can and chased Vanajakshi after others escaped. He then used a lighter to ignite her.
A brave passerby saw the attack and acted instantly. He and others used cloth and mats to douse the fire and helped rush Vanajakshi to Victoria Hospital. The helper sustained minor burn injuries in the rescue attempt.
Vanajakshi suffered nearly 60% burns and battled for life, but doctors couldnโt save her. She died from her injuries on Monday morning.
Vittal, who also had burn injuries, was arrested within 24 hours of the attack. Police charged him under serious criminal sections and assured they would ensure maximum legal action against him.
Investigators said the violence stemmed from a relationship conflict. Vanajakshi had left Vittal after enduring his abusive behavior and alcoholism. She had recently started a new life with Muniyappa, which enraged Vittal and triggered the fatal attack.
Police also recognized the passerby’s courageous act and said they would investigate further to prevent such domestic violence. Bengaluru residents expressed deep shock at the violence and called for stronger protection for women in live-in relationships.
