ED Crackdown on Delhi Hospital Scam Sparks Political Clash

On August 26, 2025, the Enforcement Directorate executed coordinated raids at 13 locations across Delhi-NCR, including the residence of former Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj. These searches are part of a sweeping investigation into suspected financial irregularities and money laundering linked to the construction of hospitals during the Aam Aadmi Party’s previous government.
ED Probe Expands Earlier ACB Findings
The raids stem from allegations initially filed by the Anti-Corruption Branch in June when Anand and former Health Minister Satyendar Jain were named in a ₹5,590 crore hospital construction scam. The ACB flagged glaring cost escalations, inordinate delays, and inflated tenders across 24 health infrastructure projects. Several ICU hospital projects remain incomplete despite substantial spending.
The Enforcement Directorate’s probe has now expanded on those findings by focusing on the money trail. According to officials, the ED suspects that funds meant for hospital construction were diverted into shell companies and benami accounts. Documents seized on Thursday reportedly include property deeds, contractor invoices, and bank statements. They suggested personal enrichment at the cost of public healthcare.
Investigators are comparing these records with statements from contractors and health department officials. Their goal is to establish whether the tendering process was manipulated and whether payments were deliberately inflated. ED sources said the agency is determined to build a watertight case that ties paper evidence to financial irregularities.
Politics Around the Action
The raids immediately triggered political reactions across Delhi. Leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party accused the central government of targeting opposition politicians through investigative agencies. They alleged that the ED action was politically motivated, designed to weaken the party ahead of municipal and assembly challenges.
In contrast, BJP leaders welcomed the raids, calling them a necessary step toward cleaning up corruption in healthcare. They argued that stalled hospital projects deprived citizens of critical medical services and that those responsible must face the law, regardless of their political affiliation.
Independent observers pointed out that while politics dominates headlines, the deeper concern lies in healthcare delivery. Thousands of Delhi residents still wait for promised facilities, ICU wards, and hospital upgrades. The scandal, they argue, highlights not only financial mismanagement but also the cost paid by citizens in the form of inadequate treatment during health emergencies.
