Bills To Remove PM, CMs, Ministers Sent To JPC After Oppn MPs Tear Copies, Throw Them At Amit Shah In Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha witnessed uproar on Wednesday as Opposition members ripped apart copies of three controversial bills concerning the removal of the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers facing serious charges with a 30-day detention period, moments after Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the proposals.

Opposition leaders stormed into the well of the House and raised slogans, while Mr. Shah dismissed allegations of rushing the legislations. He assured that the Bills would be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, giving lawmakers from both Houses, including the Opposition, a chance to present their views and recommendations.

Opposition MPs, including AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress members Manish Tewari and K. C. Venugopal, opposed the introduction of the Bills, calling the proposed legislation unconstitutional and a threat to federalism.

Amid persistent uproar and protests, the House was first adjourned till 3 p.m. When it reconvened briefly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the bills would be referred to a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee, which will submit its report before the next session of Parliament. However, with demonstrations continuing, the proceedings were again adjourned till 5 p.m.

The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, propose the removal of a Prime Minister or Chief Minister of any state or Union Territory if they are arrested or detained for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges. In such cases, if the offence carries a minimum punishment of five yearsโ€™ imprisonment, the leader would automatically lose their position on the 31st day of custody.
