Trinamool Leader Sues RG Kar Rape-Murder Victim’s Father for Defamation

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress state general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has filed a defamation case against the father of the 34-year-old doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year.

The move comes after the victim’s father alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accepted bribes from the ruling Trinamool Congress to derail the probe. He further claimed that Mr. Ghosh personally met CBI officials, made payments, and “settled” the matter.

Last week, Mr. Ghosh had sent a legal notice to the doctor’s father, seeking an apology. “I have full respect and sympathy for him. But they cannot just keep saying whatever they want or whatever someone teaches them to say. If he does not apologise, he will have to prove in court what he has said,” the Trinamool leader stated, adding that his lawyer had given four days for a response before initiating legal action.

“He is crossing all limits of lies and drama. I understand the pain of a father who has lost his daughter. But on whose words and on what information did he make such false claims?” Mr. Ghosh asked.

The victim, a doctor on night duty, was found raped and murdered on August 9 last year. Civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy was arrested and later convicted in the case. Initially investigated by the Kolkata Police, the matter was subsequently handed over to the CBI following a Calcutta High Court order.

The victim’s father, however, has consistently criticised the probe, alleging that the central agency only tried to reinforce the state police’s version—that the crime was a case of rape and murder, not gang-rape. “The CBI investigators in Kolkata ignored our contentions,” he said, accusing the state government of bribing the probe team.
