Krishna Janmashtami 2025: Date, Puja Timings, Celebrations and More

Krishna Janmashtami, a festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, will be observed nationwide on Saturday, August 16, 2025. This auspicious day marks the 5252nd birth anniversary of the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The festivities are centered around the midnight birth of Krishna, with a special emphasis on the Nishita Puja Muhurat, which is the most sacred time for worship.

Devotees across the country will celebrate with great fervor. Many observe a fast throughout the day, which is broken only after the midnight puja. Homes and temples are beautifully decorated, and idols of “Bal Gopal” (baby Krishna) are placed in swings and cradles. A key ritual is the ceremonial bathing of the idol in “Panchamrit” (a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar), followed by adorning it with new clothes and jewelry.

The celebrations extend beyond rituals with cultural events like “Rasleela,” a dramatic recreation of Krishna’s life, and “Dahi Handi,” where human pyramids are formed to break a pot of curd, symbolizing Krishna’s playful childhood.
